Israel Accuses Amnesty International of “Antisemitism” for Denouncing “War Crimes”

Israel’s Accusations Against Amnesty International

In a recent development in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, Amnesty International called for an immediate ceasefire and denounced war crimes committed by both Israel and Hamas. However, Israel’s response was one of outrage and harsh criticism of the human rights organization. Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Lior Haiat, did not mince words and accused Amnesty International of being “antisemitic” and biased against their country. Additionally, Haiat claimed that the organization lacks moral authority to consider itself a defender of human rights.

The Allegation of Bias and Inaction

Israel also questioned Amnesty International’s silence regarding the atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7, when more than 1,400 Israelis lost their lives, and over 220 were kidnapped. According to the Israeli official, this highlights that the organization is more focused on promoting a propagandistic narrative in favor of Hamas rather than advocating for human rights.

The Staggering Figures of the Military Response

Since the massive Hamas attack in October, the Israeli Defense Forces’ military response has left a devastating toll on the Gaza Strip. According to data from the Gaza Health Ministry, over 7,000 people have lost their lives, including at least 2,913 minors, and more than 18,000 have been wounded. The magnitude of the tragedy has drawn the attention of the international community.

Amnesty International’s Stance

Amnesty International, in response, has reaffirmed its commitment to denouncing human rights violations and war crimes by all parties involved in the conflict. The organization’s secretary-general, Agnès Callamard, emphasized the importance of an immediate ceasefire as the most effective way to protect civilians and alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the region.

International Reactions

Israel’s stance also triggered reactions in the international community. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres sparked outrage from Israeli authorities by stating that the Hamas attack in October did not emerge out of nowhere. In response, Israel announced the cancellation of visas for UN officials, further escalating tensions in the region.

The United States, on the other hand, expressed its support for Israel and trusted its ability to minimize civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip. In Addition, the White House National Security Council spokesperson, John Kirby, noted that the Gaza Health Ministry is under the influence of Hamas and, therefore, cannot be taken as an impartial source.

Amnesty International’s Past Instances

It is worth noting that this is not the first time Amnesty International has been criticized by a government. In the past, Ukrainian authorities accused the organization of documenting violations of international humanitarian law by Ukrainian troops, leading to comparisons with “terrorists” and “accomplices of Russia” by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. These episodes underscore the complexity and polarization of armed conflicts and how human rights organizations often find themselves in the midst of political and ethical disputes.
