In the context of growing political tension in Ecuador, a new violent incident has shaken the electoral scenario. Estefany Puente, a candidate for the National Assembly, the local legislative body, was attacked while in her vehicle with her father and an adviser. This event comes just one day after the tragic shooting death of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio.

Attack in Quevedo: Violent Pre-Election Episode

In the town of Quevedo, province of Los Ríos, at noon today witnessed an attack on the candidate. In a moving car, Estefany Puente was accompanied by her father and a collaborator when her vehicle was intercepted by two individuals. These individuals, after an exchange of gunfire, fled.

The shots that hit the vehicle were reportedly fired with a traumatic pistol, a type of weapon considered “non-lethal.” This weapon is designed to inflict painful physical trauma on the aggressor with the goal of temporarily incapacitating him. Fortunately, the candidate suffered minor injuries to her arm.

Given this incident, the police authorities have initiated an investigation to clarify the motivations behind the attack. In addition, security camera recordings have been reviewed in order to learn more about the incident.

The government of Ecuador, in response to the murder, has declared a state of emergency for 60 days and has requested the FBI’s assistance in the investigation. President Guillermo Lasso personally announced that he has asked for the FBI’s support in the investigation of the crime.
