Evanescence is an American gothic rock band, formed in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1995 by singer, songwriter and pianist Amy Lee and guitarist Ben Moody. The band became a worldwide hit with their debut album, Fallen (2003), which sold over 17 million copies worldwide and produced the hits “Bring Me to Life”, “My Immortal” and “Going Under”.
Beginnings
Lee and Moody met in 1995, when they were both 14, at a Christian camp. They began playing together and writing songs, and in 1998, they released their first EP, Origin. In 2000, they released their second EP, Sound Asleep, which caught the attention of Wind-up Records.
Fallen and worldwide success
In 2003, Evanescence released their debut album, Fallen. The album was an immediate success, reaching number one on the US and UK charts. The songs “Bring Me to Life” and “My Immortal” became worldwide hits, and Evanescence became one of the most popular bands in the world.
Crisis and separation
In 2003, Moody left the band due to musical differences. The band continued with a new guitarist, Terry Balsamo, and released their second album, The Open Door, in 2006. The album was another success, reaching number one in the United States and the United Kingdom.
In 2009, Evanescence released their third album, Evanescence, which was a commercial success, but failed to match the success of their first two albums. In 2011, the band announced an indefinite hiatus.
Return and present
In 2015, Evanescence returned with a new album, Synthesis, which was a combination of new and old songs with orchestrations. In 2021, the band released their fourth studio album, The Bitter Truth, which was a commercial and critical success.
