Tax evasion and gun possession scandal rocks US president’s son Hunter Biden

The admission of guilt by Joe Biden’s son will have direct consequences in the 2024 presidential election. According to the Justice Department, Hunter Biden has pleaded guilty to three federal charges.

According to CNN reports, this plea deal will have an immediate impact on the 2024 presidential election.

Hunter Biden will accept guilt on lesser tax-related charges and hopes to settle with prosecutors on the most serious charge, which involves illegal gun possession in connection with drug use. This is part of an agreement reached with the Department of Justice.

For its part, the White House issued a statement about the president and first lady, expressing its love and support for their son. White House spokesman Ian Sams said in a statement: “The president and first lady love their son and stand by him as he rebuilds his life. We will not comment further.”

Plea Deal

It is uncommon to resolve a federal criminal case while charges are filed in court, although it is not completely unheard of. Hunter Biden agrees to plea deal, admitting guilt in two tax-related charges, as stated in the filing by Delaware AG Weiss.

According to the plea agreement, Hunter, 53, admits to not having declared his income to the IRS in 2017 and 2018, as well as not having paid taxes corresponding to said income. In exchange for this, prosecutors will recommend parole, which could prevent him from entering prison.

The agreement also includes a “pretrial diversion,” a term used in the U.S. court system in connection with the charge of unlawful possession of a firearm. This mechanism makes it possible to avoid a traditional trial and for the accused to enter a community supervision program.

If a federal judge accepts the deal, it could mean the end of the investigation into Hunter Biden, which has affected his father, Joe Biden. Joe Biden’s political rivals have used these investigations to sow doubt about the son’s overseas business dealings and to portray the presidential family as corrupt.

This investigation was initiated in 2018 during the term of former President Donald Trump (2017-2021) and has been used by Republicans since 2020 to attack the Democratic president, claiming that he made no efforts to bring the investigation to the end.
