López Obrador suspends relations with Peru until democracy is restored

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced today that his country will not maintain diplomatic ties with Peru until a “democratic normality” is achieved and the government truly represents the people.

In relation to the conflict arising from the delivery of the pro tempore presidency of the Pacific Alliance, which Mexico should cede to Peru but has refused due to considering that the government of Dina Boluarte is not democratic, the Mexican president raised the option of transferring the mandate to Chile.

“I am willing to hand it over to Chile without any inconvenience,” López Obrador declared, emphasizing that the possibility of transferring responsibility to Colombia is not viable, since the Peruvian regime declared President Gustavo Petro persona non grata, following the same pattern they did with him.

The Mexican president made it clear that under no circumstances will he hand over the pro tempore presidency to Boluarte. “I give it to the Chileans, but not to the lady who is usurping the Presidency.”

“As long as there is no democratic normality in Peru, we do not want to maintain economic or commercial relations with them,” Lopez Obrador added, noting that bilateral relations are on a pause.

In addition, he announced that he will soon send a letter to the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, to address the issue and request that the blaming of “politicians in Peru” cease to be blamed on Mexico.
