This council emphasized the “non-negotiable” importance of the withdrawal of what they call “the French Junta” from Nigerien territory. Disputed Nigerien sovereignty
Niger celebrated what they consider a “new step towards sovereignty” in a public statement issued by the National Council for the Protection of the Fatherland. This statement, shared on platform X (formerly known as Twitter), highlighted the importance of this milestone for the nation. It was stressed that any entity or individual whose presence threatens the interests and projection of Niger must leave the national territory, emphasizing the “non-negotiable” exit of “the French Junta.” The statement emphasized the unwelcome presence of imperialist and neocolonial forces in Nigerien territory. This marks the start of a new era of cooperation rooted in mutual respect and sovereignty.
Change of Leadership and Diplomacy
This change of course in Niger followed the July 26 military coup, which resulted in the ouster of President Mohamed Bazoum, who held positions close to France. As a result of this coup, Army General Abdurrahman Ciani was proclaimed the new head of state. Subsequently, on 3 September, Niger’s Supreme Court stripped the French ambassador, Sylvain Itte, of his diplomatic immunity and approved his expulsion from the country.
Closure of Airspace and French Withdrawal
On 24 September, Niger took additional steps by closing its airspace to French aircraft. Simultaneously, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the withdrawal of the French ambassador and military forces from Niger.
