The province’s premier, David Eby, has officially declared a state of emergency in response to the crisis. So far, 388 wildfires are active in the province of British Columbia. In order to ensure accommodation for evacuees and emergency personnel, authorities have banned tourism in the areas hardest hit by the fires. This measure has been implemented in response to the need to free up hotel rooms to give shelter to the displaced and the personnel working in the containment of the fires. British Columbia’s Minister of Emergencies, Bowinn Ma, has reported the inability to accommodate non-essential visitors in the areas of greatest impact.
Challenges in different regions
The situation is repeated in the Northwest Territories, in the north of the country, where residents have been evacuated due to surrounding wildfires. Yellowknife, the region’s capital, has been forced to evacuate 20,000 residents due to the threat of fires. Although weather conditions have improved, Yellowknife Mayor Rebecca Alty has expressed concern about continued instability and danger, urging residents not to return to the city.
Rescue and Support Operation
Several flights have been diverted from Yellowknife to Calgary to ensure the safety of evacuated residents. At least 40 flights with 3,500 passengers on board have landed in the city of Calgary, located in southern Alberta. Authorities have provided 495 hotel rooms for evacuees, showing a concerted effort to provide support during this ongoing crisis.
